Ask about manufacturing early
Early decisions affect part shape, tooling, assembly, and quality. If the team checks manufacturing constraints only after the design is detailed, a fix may affect several parts or delay planned work.
An early DFM review gives the team time to compare options before settling on a design or process.
Review the process the design is actually for
Useful DFM feedback depends on the material, supplier, expected quantity, and process. An injection-molded enclosure, a machined bracket, and a sheet-metal housing each need a different review.
- For molded parts, review wall transitions, draft, ribs, and parting strategy.
- For machined parts, consider tool access, internal corners, setups, and tolerances.
- For assemblies, check fastening, alignment, service access, and part count.
Make DFM a conversation
A good review explains the risk and gives the team options. That makes it easier to weigh function, appearance, cost, and timing before changing the design.
